Fed: Costello warns PBS could break if costs not contained

PETER COSTELLO is warning Australia's system of subsidised medicines could disappear
over the next few decades .. if the government doesn't keep trying to tackle rising health
costs.

The treasurer says the government needs to remain vigilant with the Pharmaceutical
Benefits Scheme.

Mr COSTELLO says new pharmaceuticals are being invented all the time .. and they're
much more expensive.

And he says the ageing population contributes to the increased use of pharmaceuticals.
