'Band of Brothers' story offers valuable lessons in leadership

On Jan. 2, Central Pennsylvania resident Maj. Richard Winters passed away. He was a World War II citizen-soldier whose personal example and principles of leadership provide a clear roadmap for prospective leaders to follow.

When his commanding officer's plane went down during the night jump into Normandy, then-Lt. Winters took command of Easy Company of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. He and his men fought in Normandy and Holland, and at Bastogne before entering Germany and ultimately taking Adolph Hitler's Eagle's Nest retreat in Bavaria.

Easy Company was immortalized in the Stephen Ambrose book and HBO …
