Fed: PM urged to fix black health crisis in Budget

Key Aboriginal organisations have urged Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD to commit to fixingthe national crisis in indigenous health in next month's Budget.

National Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Organisation chairman HENRY COUNCILLORand ATSIC chairman GEOFF CLARK have urged the government not to sideline indigenous healthin the war-focussed Budget.

Both leaders have released a joint statement saying that until funding genuinely matchesthe level of need, there will never be real improvements in health outcomes for Aborigines.

They say they don't accept that indigenous people have to wait for slow incrementalchange to see improvements while hundreds die of preventable causes.

The statement says the gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal health could be closedsubstantially and relatively quickly.
