Pact signals Afghan pullout by Soviets

GENEVA Pakistan and Afghanistan on Thursday signed a U.S.- andSoviet-guaranteed accord that will mean the end of more than eightyears of Soviet military presence in Afghanistan, but not the end ofbloodshed in that war-torn country.

The Soviet forces that rolled into Afghanistan in December,1979, are to start their nine-month phased withdrawal on May 15.Under terms of the accord, half of the estimated 115,000 Soviettroops in Afghanistan must be out by Aug. 15.

Soviet losses during the bitter war with Afghan rebels areestimated by Western experts at 15,000 to 20,000 men.
